First iPebble touch Unboxing Pics! by in Technology / October 9th, 2007
When we read this morning that a girl from Texas opened her new iPod box to find rocks instead, we got a little mad. We’ve been labouring under this restrictive Apple NDA for close to four months now, and just as we’re about to release our exclusive, some fool at Target breaks the release embargo and screws us over. Whatever.
So here, for ALMOST the first time ever, is your inside look at the unboxing of the new iPebble touch:
Ooo, the anticipation!
There she is. Beautiful!
Out of the packaging… the iPebble is remarkably light. It fits into most pockets easily, and is more likely to scratch your keys than the other way around.
Notice how thin it is? Pebbles from Dell are usually five times as thick, and have sharp edges that cut your fingers. Also, they smell.
Only gripe: the standard Apple earbuds. Don’t know how to plug them into the iPebble OR our ears. Will have to find some good Sony replacements before we go jogging.
Specs-wise, the iPebble touch is a fantastic addition to the Apple line-up. Its UI is, naturally, very limited, but it shows the Jobsian minimalist streak in full force. Jonathan Ive deserves a Nobel Prize for the sheer genius of the design… it just seems so natural. So far, our tests indicate a 27-hour battery life, though it’s hard to say without visual feedback of any kind.
Tomorrow we’ll take our screwdrivers to the iPebble and see what’s inside. Stay tuned!
Update: Our “inside look” at the iPebble will have to wait a few days. Dan was taking a chisel to see if he could get root access for Jailbreak, and got some rock chips in his eye. This does not bode well for expandability… once again, Apple is stonewalling the modding community!

I heard there’s going to be a big European release party at Gibraltar on St Peter’s day.

You need a Bluetooth adaptor for standard ear-buds.
The iPebble comes with a pair of earStones (headStones an optional extra for the audiophile).
The iPebble accepts input via fingernail taps and rotational/translational gestures. An internal solenoid provides answering clicks, though most feedback occurs via voice to the earStones.
Thus to adjust the volume one simply taps once, and then rotates the iPebble around any horizontal axis.

October 11th, 2007 at 1:46 pm

@anonymous: I could not agree more. We’re collecting a fantastic array of bad jokes here, aren’t we?
October 13th, 2007 at 12:09 pm
Another poorly designed product… I guess we can no longer take it for GRANITE that Apple will make products that will meet all or our needs.
October 13th, 2007 at 12:48 pm
You’re all wrong! It’s just a camouflage-painted Mighty Mouse!

PC USERS! You have to soak the iPebble in water and throw it at your computer monitor full force in order to sync it all the way. Works with all versions of Windows… even back to 1.0!
MAC USERS! You have to have leopard, Jobs makes the rules. Yes, he knows it’s not out yet.
The Hackers are already trying to mod it. They’re trying to give it that “sharpened” look, and they’ve added some 3rd party applications like Sit.app, Roll.app and the beta version of Fly.app. However, Apple has an application in the works that transforms the iPebble into a supercool invisible shield you can command at any time. It just costs 99 cents per second you’re invisible. Once again, if you’ve modded your iPebble it will become completely inoperable after installing the new software.
Lastly, Microsoft at a recent press release discussed their plans to create a cell phone that combines a ‘natural user interface’ with Windows Vista IN FULL as well as the comeback of the brown color in a rock-like form factor. This will best any of their other hardware products. They call it the ZunePhone: Natural Edition version 1.0 HD. Microsoft also claims that you can imagine it doing anything you can imagine it doing.
October 15th, 2007 at 3:00 pm
I won’t buy mine just yet, rumour has it that a 2nd gen iPebble’s just around the corner, with improvements on every feature of the 1st.
5 new colours anyone?
October 15th, 2007 at 6:13 pm
Yeah, and the poor schmucks who paid full price will really be po’ed when they drop the price to a rock-bottom level. Oh, and don’t try the Windows synch while running Boot Camp, or it will crash your MacBook Pro.
October 16th, 2007 at 7:47 am
I am pretty sure that soon or later we will have a special “Rolling Stones” edition of the iPeeble…
October 26th, 2007 at 4:40 pm
How long until the iPebble gravel? And the Fruity iPebbles?
October 26th, 2007 at 7:45 pm
They are still not selling iPhones here in Canada. Thankfully, we will also have to wait for our iRocks!! There are no lineups yet in Toronto.
